Spending her time between London and Hong Kong, photographer Natalie Chyi makes photography look effortless. Shot mostly on film, her photos caught our attention with her visually captivating colours and dream-like quality. We had a quick chat with the talented photographer about her work and what she thinks would be an ideal situation to shoot.

Educated at University College London where she is currently in her final year studying Law, Natalie Chyi started to love taking photos ever since she got her hands on a camera. “I started to really get into photography probably when I got my first DSLR, and that was the summer before freshman year of high school. I’ve been using 100% lm for the past two years now. Both ( film and digital photography) have their merits, but I feel like film suits the type of photos I take more. The kind of work I shoot consists of candid photos of everyday life, my travels, as well as more deliberate shoots of models that have been styled and planned which consist of mostly people that I love, people with good energy, people in beautiful environments, and little moments with pretty light and so colours.”

“There are so many photographers that I look up to who have influenced my style, I wouldn’t be able to list them all! They change all the time, but lately I’ve been following the work of Francesca Jane Allen, Lauren Withrow, Harley Weir, Bao Ngo, Leo Berne, Le Cam Romain, Petra Collins, Theo Gosselin, Coco Capitan and Paolo Raeli. If I had to pick a quote about photography that has really stuck with me, it would have to be this quote by Susan Sontag; ‘Needing to have reality confirmed and experience enhanced by photographs is an aesthetic consumerism to which everyone is now addicted."

Chyi has an amazing body of work and it is with no doubt that she has the eye for photography and a unique perspective on capturing daily moments. She hopes to still be enjoying what she does after graduating university and we also asked her who would be her ultimate “client” to shoot. “Not really a client, but it’d be a dream to shoot model Xiao Wen Ju...”
